About the Russian Language

Russian is spoken not only in Russia and Eastern Europe. According to some sources, millions of people worldwide communicate using it. Belonging to the so-called East Slavic subgroup of the Indo-European family, it has evolved over the decades. As with all languages, in the beginning, it was very different to the one we are having now.

It has undergone some transformations, mainly in its written variant:

  • First, it was Tsar Peter the Great (1696-1725) who decided to simplify the Russian language by making it easier for people to speak.
  • Then, in 1755 a scientist, philosopher, and writer Mikhail Lomonosov wrote a book on grammar by changing some rules.
  • In the 19th century, the famous poet Alexander Pushkin changed the writing rules and introduced new vocabulary.
  • The last stage of the development of the language was a spelling reform in 1918. At that time, the Cyrillic hard sign at the end of the words was removed from the alphabet.
